ACTIVITIES

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING

We will bring the membership up to date on our activities over the past year as well as the projects we have planned for 2010-11.

P‑38 RIDE ALONG

This may be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for many of you.  If we have enough members showing an interest, they will have the opportunity to do a ride along in a P‑38. As some of you know, last year's flights were cancelled due to P-38 radiator problems on the ground in Chino, so we're offering them again this year.

Full details are now available.  If you are interested in purchasing a flight, here is the complete info. Flights will be available on Saturday, June 26 only.

"P‑38 vs P-51" Symposium

Well now.  Hasn't this been the topic of some discussion over the decades...?

Therefore, on Saturday afternoon, June 26, we will be hosting a symposium at the Planes of Fame Valle Museum to have a "spirited debate" on the two planes.  Which one WAS the better aircraft? And why?  We are planning to have several P‑38 pilots and/or crew members on the panel who have flown or worked with both planes. The audience will be encouraged to offer their opinions as well in this interactive discussion.

ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP DRIVE
30% DISCOUNT

The P‑38 National Association is one of the finest WWII-era organizations out there today.  Not only are we surviving during challenging times for organizations like ours, but we are thriving.

Therefore, we have decided that from opening day of the General Membership Meeting through to the end of July we are giving all U.S. non members the opportunity to join the P‑38 Association for the astonishingly low price of $20 for an annual membership.  Not only is that 1/3 lower than our current $30 annual membership dues, it's even lower than the $25 dues we had set 10 years ago!

If you're planning to bring any new folks into the Association (or want to give them a gift membership), this is the time to do it.

There is no limit to the number of new members you bring in, but this special dues rate is for new members only and will be ending on June 30, 2010, so bring your address books. Special dues rate available between June 1 and June 30, 2010 only.  All applications must be either turned in at the Membership Meeting in AZ or postmarked no later than June 30, 2010.

"high country warbirds" Fly-in

This event is set to run the entire day. There will be no admission charge for those attending our Membership Meeting.  The event typically has rides available in many of their vintage aircraft.  Fees vary, depending on the plane.  The Mustang is always a popular choice.

The P‑38 Association will have a merchandise table set up, as well as an autograph area for those who'd like to collect a few P‑38 pilot/crew autographs or pick up a souvenir or two.

MEAL EVENTS

FRIDAY NIGHT BBQ

The Planes of Fame is hosting a BBQ after our General Membership Meeting and after they have finished preparations for the Fly-In the next day, and we are all invited.

This is always a big hit with our group.  Lots of great food and a chance to schmooze with those with hands-on experience with the P-38 (both currently and in the past).

SATURDAY NIGHT DINNER

After the events on Saturday, we will all be getting together for a fun, no agenda, no host dinner at the Grand Canyon Squire Inn. For those staying at the Grand Canyon Squire Inn, it's an easy commute (just walk to your room), so adult beverages will definitely be safely on the agenda.

To visit the Planes of Fame Valle Air Museum site, check here.

Hotel Information

Best Western Grand Canyon Squire Inn
100 Highway 64
Grand Canyon, AZ 86023

Unlike the past two annual meetings, this year we have reserved a block of rooms on the far side of Valle, closer to the Grand Canyon, in the town of Tusayan, which is about 1.5 miles from the Grand Canyon entrance on rout 64. As this is a much more tourist-oriented town than Williams is, we have done our best with the rate

The P‑38 Association has blocked a limited number of rooms at the hotel, so make your reservations early!  Once the rooms are gone, the regular room rate will apply.

You will receive a special group rate of $150.00 (+tax) per night, with Continental breakfast.

Note from Howie:  Please keep in mind that June is "In Season" and Tusayan is a tourist town. I've been told the Continental breakfast is a full hot, cold presentation.

Please make your reservations at: 800-622-6966 (8AM to 5PM seven days a week).

Reservation ID  #236200

The $150.00 per night rate is guarantied until May 24, 2010 only.

 HELPFUL HOTEL INFO

The town is 51 miles from the intersection of I-40 and Highway 64. That's about 30 miles passed the Valle Airport.

The hotel has two restaurants on the premises, from casual to the fine dining Coronado Room.

  1. 1.5 miles from shuttle buses into the Grand Canyon. Buses are free but it will cost to purchase tickets for park entry. Tickets purchased at the Best Western Inn.

  2. 3 miles to the IMAX Theater.

  3. 5 miles from Grand Canyon Airlines Airtours, helicopter and fixed wing aircraft.

  4. Sunset Jeep tours are also available in Town.

  5. For our members that crave “Fast Foods” McDonalds and Pizza Hut are located approximately 1 mile from the hotel.

GRAND CANYON INFO

Shuttles buses into and throughout the Grand Canyon are free. The park entry fee by car is $ 25.00. It appears an individual’s permit is $12.00. Park entry permits must be purchased prior to entering the shuttle. Park Entry Permits may be purchased at our Hotel.

I have been to the Grand Canyon twice and Tusayan once so my recommendation is taking a couple of extra days and make this a vacation trip.

About Tusayan

Tusayan is about 1.5 miles from the Grand Canyon entrance on Rt 64. This village offers a number of experiences, including the Grand Canyon IMAX Theater. The seven-story, giant screen presentation of the Grand Canyon offers guests a chance to experience climbing and rafting through the canyons on-screen. Many tour companies offer sightseeing flights by helicopter and airplane from the Grand Canyon Airport.  The Center operates as a natural and cultural resource, providing information on the parks and wildlife in the area.

AIRPORT INFO

The nearest, large airport to the hotel/Grand Canyon would be Flagstaff, which is a relatively short drive to Valle.

Flagstaff Pulliam Airport (FLG) is located off Interstate Hwy 17 and Hwy 487, six miles south of the business district of the City of Flagstaff in Coconino County, Arizona.

Steve Blake also found a phone number that may be of help to you regarding flights to Flagstaff:  888-559-2575

Both US Airways Express and Horizon/Alaska Air serve Flagstaff (FLG).

The airport also has plenty of rental car options.

See you there!
